Background and Credentials

Meg S. Kaplan, Ph.D. Is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. She has been Director of the Sexual Behavior Clinic at New York State Psychiatric Institute since 1990.

She is a clinical psychologist and sexologist who has specialized in treating sexual disorders since 1985. She has also conducted research since 1985. Dr. Kaplan belongs to several major sex research organizations and has over 50 publications. She lectures frequently on various topics in human sexuality to professionals as well as the public. She has taught and supervised medical students, residents, and fellows at Columbia since 1985.

Dr. Kaplan is a board member of the New York State Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers and former board member of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers. She is also a member of the Special Classification Review Board at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenel, New Jersey.

 

Areas of Expertise

Dr. Kaplan's Professional Interest and Expertise Center on the Following:

  • Compulsive Sexual Behavior and Paraphilias:
    Specializing in the cognitive-behavioral treatment of adults and adolescents with paraphilias and/or atypical sexual interests and behaviors, such as compulsive usage of the Internet.

  • Sex Therapy
    Working with individuals and/or couples with problems of sexual dysfunction, including sexual desire disorders, compulsive sexual behavior, and other sexual disorders.

  • Human Sexuality Education:
    Dr. Kaplan is active in education professionals in how to teach sexual education and HIV prevention to adolescents, adults and those with mental illnesses.
